balance

"Left knee up, toe down and hold it until I say put it down. Can you sit a book on that knee?! Stop wobbling! Ladies, this is great for your thighs; you'll thank me later." This is the very well known script of my high school marching band instructor during drills. I know it sounds like total gibberish because nobody does high-knees marching anymore, but we did. And it was awesome. I can stand on one leg with the other knee raised to belly button height for a ridiculous length of time- just dare me. Physical balance has never been a challenge for me. Life balance is another story altogether.

Today I worked from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm exactly. 3 hours in the office, 4 hours on the road, 2 hours in a client meeting in proper business attire and 3 hours hiking around the desert in modified business attire taking pictures and trying to avoid getting jumped. How many hours sleeping tonight? We'll see. I'm not optimistic.

This is the way it's been, lately. Every day. Like I keep saying, it is a darn good thing I love what I do because if I didn't it would kill me. But it still may be killing me. What good is it to love what I do at work if it means I have no time to do what I love at home? Can't I be awesome at both? But the further ahead I get in my job the further behind I get at branding and finishing a manuscript and packing to move this weekend and cooking edible food for my poor starving husband and doing anything else other than sleeping and praying. My brain is turning inside out, constantly churning out lists, trying to remember what I needed to anticipate so I can stay a couple steps ahead rather than being able to live in the moment.

Oh. Remember back in February when I mentioned we still had our Christmas tree up and we all got a good laugh about that? Well it is now mid-April and that tree is still fully decorated, snowmen and all. Of course we actually are moving this weekend, so our theory has been that we'll undecorate it while we're packing. Sure we will...or maybe we'll just haul it to our new place fully decorated and set it up 8 months early.
